The Sofia Foundation

The Sofia Foundation is a non-profit organisation headquartered in Brussels. We help accelerate women’s participation in economic, political and social governance across Europe. Our objective is twofold: first, to complement EU action engaging accomplished women leaders on boards of organisations, and second, to promote women as experts in the information media.

We run the top-ranked EU-funded project Accelerate! (2014-2016), working with partners from Belgium, France, Italy, Poland, Portugal, and Slovenia. We strive for gender balance in leadership and decision-making: building a community of women and men from a wide range of cultures, disciplines, and industries sharing their collective wisdom to meet this world’s increasingly complex challenges.

Our Europe-wide networks span across representatives of the EU institutions, business leaders, journalists, researchers, and civil society stakeholders.

Founding Partners

Synergies with other organisations and networks drive our agenda. The three founding organisations of the Sofia Foundation partner with the Global Board Ready Women Initiative supported by the European Commission:

The Board Foundation in collaboration with St Gallen University, Switzerland, among the Financial Times top-ranked European business schools; founder of a database with profiles of board-ready and board-experienced women in 2005 (The Female Board Pool); renowned for their work on balanced leadership and founding partner of the Global Board Ready Women Initiative.

Professional Women International (PWI), the Brussels Chapter of PWN/Professional Women’s Network (PWN) Global, an international platform for women in business and senior management spanning across Europe, Latin America and the middle east; and equally founding partner of the Global Board Ready Women Initiative.

Astia, a global non-profit organization dedicated to building women leaders and promoting high-growth women-led start-ups worldwide; and a partnering organization of the Global Board Ready Women Initiative.
